Student Medical Insurance

Medical insurance is vitally important for students, but many students depend on the university's student health care facility rather than paying for their own insurance plan.  By failing to obtain your own medical insurance policy, it puts you at risk of not getting the proper health care or not having your expenses covered.  This is because most  facilities do not provide adequate care. This puts the student at further risk because they may have to pay out of pocket for their health care concerns, so it is wise for teens and young adults to seriously consider obtaining their own insurance policy for the benefit of their healthcare.

Considering Your Options

Several insurance companies offer student health insurance programs and they are available in all states from a variety of providers. Rates and benefits can differ from the various insurance providers. Making comparisons between several companies is the best way for students to get the best coverage and deal for their health care needs. The more information that is gathered the better choice the student will make because prices and coverage varies widely.

Most policies cover undergraduates or full-time graduate student attending a state-accredited college or university and most policies cover against unexpected illnesses or accidents. And many pay for high cost matters such as hospital stays, surgery and for routine doctor visits. But all plans do not cover these types of things so the student must be diligent in their search for the right plan.

What is Covered by These Plans?

In some polices dental, eye care and pre-existing conditions such as maternity and routine physical exams are not covered. Also outpatient prescription drugs, mental illness or substance abuse are not covered as well. Most polices do not cover routine physical exams or intercollegiate sports injuries.

The following are some important questions that should be asked about obtaining young adult insurance:

  • What is the maximum that will be covered by the policy?
  • What are the deductibles?
  • How much will the policy cost?
  • How will the cost change with various deductibles?
  • What is not covered in the plan, for example, some insurance plans do not cover injuries obtained while playing varsity sports.
  • Are their restrictions of what doctor can be used with the policy?
  • Will a referral be needed if seeing a specialist is required?
  • Do they need to be pre-approved by the insurance company before a health-care provider can be seen?
  • Does the plan cover graduate students, or is the plan limited to undergrads?
  • How long will the medical insurance policy last?

Student medical plans is something that should be carefully considered. Everyone does not require the same coverage, so the student should look over many plans before deciding which one is right for them. A hasty decision should not be made when choosing the policy that is right for you. If the student takes their time they will be more certain to obtain the best plan for their individual needs.
